I'm always fascinated by retellings of existing stories, especially when the story is told from the perspective of a minor character. Penelope reminds us that Odysseus competed for Helen's (her cousin) hand but lost to Menelaus. The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood 2005, 199 pages. Critically acclaimed when it was first published as part of Canongate's Myth series, and following a very successful adaptation by the RSC, this new edition of The Penelopiad sees Margaret Atwood give Penelope a modern and witty voice to tell her side of the story, and set the I heard the audiobook, narrated by Laural Merlington, who does a wonderful job, especially the parts where she imitates the voice of the twelve maids who were hacked off by Odysseus. I personally cant find much love for these “add on” stories to classic greek myths. The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus by Marget Atwood. In Homer's depiction we see them as innocent by standards, but in the Penelopiad we see that they are used by Penelope to spy and keep the suitors busy till Odysseus is to return home. These maids have haunted Atwood, and in The Penelopiad, Penelope gives us their story, uncoiling the truth behind their brief and dismissive appearance in The Odyssey. After the games Depending on which myth you read, Helen was either stolen or gifted to Paris by Aphrodite, but Atwood goes with Occam's razor: that Helen ran off with prettyboy Paris. This includes her 2006 book The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus, a wry retelling of the familiar story of Homer's Odyssey from the perspective of his wife, Penelope. The Penelopiad is Atwood's re-telling of Homer's The Odyssey from the perspective of his loyal wife Penelope.
